Square One is a purpose built youth centre situated in the largely residential area of Vicars Cross.

Outcomes

  • The transfer of the building to Great Boughton Parish Council
  • An expansion of use
  • Greater local community involvement in the space
  • The development of a strong relationship between the parties

Background

The building was managed by Connexions until 2011 when it was returned to Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC).

The Council enabled a range of classes from keep-fit to mother and toddler to be run in the building on a rental basis.

Great Boughton Parish Council identified a need locally for a hub for community initiatives, activities and services and saw the potential of the building. The Parish Council indicated its desire to take over responsibility for the building and conversations with CWaC began.

Transfer support

To support the transfer process CWaC provided business planning help and expertise, and also developed a freehold transfer agreement that has enabled the Parish Council to take over the management of the building as a going concern.

Improving standards

Following the completion of the transfer in September 2014, a part time Centre Manager, has been employed to manage the expansion of activities.
